Friedrich Gretsch, an immigrant from Mannheim in Germany, founded a small boutique in Brooklyn in 1883. He created a dynasty that continues to this day. Yet Friedrich Gretsch died unexpectedly in 1895 before he could really explode.
Friedrich Gretsch died on his way home, leaving the company to his young son Fred, aged 15. In just a few years, the young Fred Gretsch, Sr. skilfully managed to turn his father's small shop into a renowned instrument manufacturing company. Incidentally, he worked next door to a restaurant which, no matter what he ordered, always served him milk because of his young age!
Energetic and enterprising, Fred Gretsch, Sr. built his business on a reputation for precision and quality. After two decades of management, he moved his premises in 1916 to a historic building at 60 Broadway in Brooklyn, where he remained until the company moved to Cincinnati, Ohio in 1972.
The company lived through its ups and downs, but remained one of the big names in the music business, always reputable and well represented, by jazz artists such as Elvin Jones, Tony Williams, Art Blakey and rockers like Charlie Watts.
Gretsch, a family story, a life story, a quality business, a brand like no other!
