In several interviews, Marcus Miller talks about the importance of singing bass lines. He often tries to create parts that can be memorised like a main melody. This vision moves away from the traditional role of the bass as a purely rhythmic instrument. For him, the instrument sometimes becomes the central voice of the piece. This approach helps to make his compositions accessible even to listeners unfamiliar with instrumental jazz. It also explains why some of his bass lines have become emblematic among musicians.
