To speak of Marcus Miller is to evoke a major figure in modern bass, a musician whose sound and vision have had a profound impact on jazz, funk and far beyond. Born on 14 June 1959 in Brooklyn, New York, he grew up in a family of musicians, immersing himself in a demanding artistic environment from an early age. A multi-instrumentalist, he mastered the bass, bass clarinet, saxophone and keyboards, but it was above all as a bassist that he made his mark on the international scene.
His career took a decisive turn in the 1980s when he collaborated with Miles Davis. He became not only his bassist, but also a key composer and producer, penning much of the album Tutu (1986), which helped redefine the sound of jazz fusion at the time. His approach to groove, combining rhythmic precision and expressiveness, became a benchmark.
