When you pass your signal from your instrument to your amp via long cables and/or via a wide range of variable impedance effects, there is bound to be some degradation of the signal. The CAE Buffer solves this problem. It has a +6dB gain slider with Hi/Lo mute switches to compensate for signal loss and other features.

The MC406 is a low-noise buffer in a small, robust package. It can add up to +6dB of gain with the gain slider facing forward.
It compensates for the signal loss that can occur when combining effects with different impedance levels.
It refines signal recovery using the Hi and Lo cut switches. It has an additional output for a tuner, effects chain or separate amp, and can be set to receive a buffered or unbuffered signal, it also has a handy 9VDC power output socket for powering another pedal.
