Electric Guitar Effects

The Power 50 Overdrive pedal was inspired by the guitarist behind Rage Against the Machine, Audioslave and Prophets of Rage. For over 30 years, the key to Tom Morello's raw, punchy sonic voice has been his amp configuration. The MXR Power 50 Overdrive captures the sound and functionality of this configuration for use with any rig, whether you have a simple combo amp or a high-end stack.

The Power 50 Overdrive circuit uses MOSFET technology to recreate the preamp stages of Tom's amp, giving you a performance capable of reproducing those big, gnarly tones.

Tom relies solely on his amplifier for his signature distortion sounds, and when you step up to the Power 50 Overdrive, you'll understand why.

The Power 50 Overdrive has the same control interface as Tom's amp, with Gain, Bass, Middle, Treble, Volume and Presence knobs so you can replicate its exact parameters or tweak the sound to your taste.

Tom runs all his effects pedals through his amp's effects loop, giving his signal chain a unique tonal feel.
The Power 50 Overdrive also recreates this same functionality, so you can give your signal chain the same character. Its own effects loop taps into the raw signal's clipping point before presence control and custom tone shaping at the output.

If you've got the Cry Baby Tom Morello Wah, this is where you can nail Tom's wah tone. Slip it into the loop and recreate his aggressive but balanced sweeps. Running the Cry Baby Wah before the Power 50 Overdrive will produce a more subtle overall wah effect, while running it after the Power 50 Overdrive will give you a very pronounced treble response when you push the effect to its maximum.

The effects loop is also perfect for a live setup, if you keep the Power 50 Overdrive on for your sound and run your pedal chain through the loop, you don't have to worry about setting levels for a bunch of different pedals every time you play a different bar or club. Simply adjust the Power 50 Overdrive interface to suit the acoustics of the venue.

The MXR Tom Morello Power 50 Overdrive faithfully recreates one of the most iconic guitar sounds of the modern rock'n'roll era. Tom used a half stack to refine this sound, and now you can put it straight into your pedalboard.

Tom Morello on the MXR TBM1 Power 50:
"The Power 50 Overdrive emulates the amp setup I've been using since 1988.
I've made 21 studio albums, and this amp, this head and this speaker, and this tone are on 21 of them. It's been my signature sound since the first day of my career.
If you want the sound of those records, you don't have to go looking for a 1988 amp and speaker. You can get it with the Power 50 Overdrive, whatever your setup."
