The JD-XA is a unique hybrid synthesizer that combines the warmth of analog with the versatility of digital in a single, uncompromisingly creative instrument. It’s a four-part all-analog beast, with true analog filters and a dry output. But it’s also a four-part digital sound generator, incorporating Roland’s SuperNATURAL Synth technology and an impressive array of powerful effects. The JD-XA’s generators can be used independently or interactively, putting an incredibly flexible sound design platform at your fingertips, whether in the studio or on stage. You can use the analog and digital parts together, combine them for devastating sonic power, or shape digital waveforms via the analog filters, creating sounds you’ve never heard before. With the JD-XA, you don’t have to worry about choosing between analog and digital; just close your eyes, imagine your future sounds, and create them.

  • Roland JD-XA
  • Digital hybrid synthesizer
  • 49-key keyboard (with velocity and channel aftertouch)
  • 16-character, 2-line LCD display
  • Maximum polyphony: analog part: 4 voices; digital part: 64 voices (varies according to the load of the sound generator)
  • An advanced synthesizer with independent analog and digital sound generators
  • Discrete analog generator (4 parts) with two oscillators, Filter, Amp, four envelopes (2 x Pitch, Filter, Amp), and two LFOs per voice, plus an "Analog Dry" output to recover a raw signal
  • The analog filter section offers 4-pole transistor-ladder filters, as well as multi-mode filters (LPF/HPF/BPF), providing a natural and extremely smooth response to controller movements
  • The OSC section includes Cross, Ring modulations and OSC Sync, with the possibility of using them simultaneously
  • Wide range of LFOs, from ultra-slow to ultra-fast
  • An incredibly fast envelope attack time
  • The digital section is built around the SuperNATURAL Synth generator (four parts, 64 voices), compatible with the sound bank INTEGRA-7, available on Roland's Axial online portal
  • Digital parts can be routed to the analog filter, for a warmer, more organic sound
  • Comprehensive effects, with MFX for all parts, plus six system effects: Reverb, TFX1, TFX2, Delay, Master EQ
  • Extensive routing possibilities for unconstrained creativity
  • An intuitive 16-track sequencer for quickly creating loops and songs: 8 tracks for internal parts, 8 tracks for external parts
  • Onboard USB, MIDI and CV/GATE interfaces, as well as very flexible MIDI control features, make the JD-XA the ideal hub for your stage or studio rig
  • The Mic input lets you modulate synth sounds with your voice, and explore classic Vocoder features
  • Pitch bend and modulation lever, Pitch and modulation wheels
  • Numerous backlit buttons and sliders, for easy manipulation easy sound settings
  • Dimensions: 899 x 388 x111 mm
  • Weight: 6.5 kg
The JD-XA's analog filter provides both a warm sound and an immediate response, for a very high level of sonic creativity. The precision and speed of the JD-XA's envelope is also important, as it defines the precision of the sound's contour. Each of the analog parts can have its own dedicated effects, and all parts can be processed together by digital effects such as a Master EQ, Chorus, Fuzz, etc.

The digital section offers a diverse palette of sounds, from fat synthetic waveforms to the most crystalline metallic timbres. Digital sounds can be sent to the analog filter, to be instantly endowed with organic richness. It is also possible, by using both generators at the same time, to create massive hybrid sounds. The Poly Stack mode, for example, allows the four analog parts to be superimposed for richness and body, then digital timbres to be added to spice it all up.

Roland’s famous Supersaw waveform, obtained via a digital part, can thus be transformed into a rich and warm pad sound simply by passing it through the analog filter. Even simple white noise can be transformed into a range of complex sound effects, ideal for film or video game music. First, enrich the noise with the two types of TFX, one of them providing a subsonic reinforcement, the second a short reverb to give it body. Then pass the resulting sound through one of the analog modulations Ring Mod or Cross Mod, and modify their parameters in real time to vary the colors of the timbres.
