During the 1990s, the JV-1080 helped shape the sound of R&B, hip-hop and rock, and was used extensively in film and TV scores. Originally designed to imitate acoustic instruments, many of its sounds have become so widespread that they are now part of the collective musical vocabulary. Some say it's the most recorded module in history, but some of today's artists still manage to use its sounds creatively.
In the early 1990s, digital synthesizers totally dominated the market, and rack-mounted models had become very popular in studios and on stage. Advances in digital technology allowed Roland to begin integrating incredible amounts of sound into a single instrument. And by using optional PCM sound cards, users could increase the number of specialist sounds available to them.
