The Arturia KeyLab MK3 61 Black not only looks great, it feels great too. Its responsive, semi-weighted keyboard, flanked by aftertouch, a smart colour screen and full DAW controls, makes you want to tap away without moderation. Add to that a set of sensitive pads, supple faders and 360° potentiometers that never leave you hanging, and you've got a musical interface that doesn't pretend to understand you.
But don't be fooled by its slightly chic stage piano look. This KeyLab MK3 61-key version hides a host of unexpectedly practical features under the bonnet: Scale modes and a whimsical arpeggiator to reconcile your fingers with theory, intelligent chords to simulate years of conservatory studies, and advanced compatibility with a host of DAWs. The icing on the cake is the Analog Lab Pro suite, with over 2,000 sounds included for laying down a carpet of sound without breaking a sweat.
When it comes to construction, Arturia is going for something solid. With its wood and aluminium chassis, well thought-out connections (MIDI, USB-C, pedals, etc.) and native integration with its software ecosystem, the KeyLab MK3 Black ticks all the boxes. Including the crucial one of "not betraying you in the middle of an inspired session at 3am".
As for the Komplete 15 Standard Upgrade bundle, it's not there to make up the numbers. It brings together an armada of virtual instruments, studio effects and sound libraries to cover just about every known musical genre, plus a few still in the making. With over 95 creative tools, 50 expansions and 50,000 sounds, this pack is more like a magic toolkit than a simple download. Special mention should be made of the Kontakt 8 and Guitar Rig 7 Pro pairing, which has no end of surprises in store for you.
