United Studio Technologies - Vintage Direct

The Vintage Direct from United Studio Technologies takes a classic approach to direct recording, inspired by the very first direct boxes used in studios in the 1960s. At a time when circuits were simple, robust and focused on the quality of the transformer, United chose to go back to basics by eliminating any element that might alter the signal.

At the heart of the Vintage Direct is a massive United 5078 transformer, wound in the USA and directly inspired by historic UTC models. This large-core transformer uses high-nickel laminations and a carefully shielded structure, ensuring excellent isolation, extended frequency response and the ability to handle high levels without unwanted compression. The signal enters the transformer directly, without passing through resistor networks, potentiometers or intermediate filters, thus preserving the integrity of the signal and the dynamics of the source.

Unlike many modern passive DIs, Vintage Direct manages level adaptation via different taps on the output transformer, combined with a precise attenuator. This approach makes it possible to adjust the output level without altering the sonic signature, whether the source is a passive bass, a very powerful synthesizer or an electric guitar. The range of levels available makes it easy to adapt to any microphone preamplifier, whether in the studio or in a live recording situation.

Designed for intensive professional use, the Vintage Direct features phase reversal and ground lift to effectively eliminate problems of ground loops and phase compatibility during multiple recordings. Its thick aluminium chassis, with its recessed design, protects the controls and connectors from impact, while remaining perfectly in place both on stage and in the control room.
