The United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 is a versatile large-diaphragm condenser microphone, capable of faithfully reproducing the sonic signatures of vintage and modern versions of the Type 87 microphones, thanks to a switchable dual circuit and a fully analogue design.

The United Studio Technologies UT Twin87 was born of a clear ambition: to bring together, in a single microphone, the two most distinctive historical interpretations of '87-style' design. Where the market traditionally pits a softer vintage version against a more open and present modern version, United has chosen a radically different path: to integrate two complete and authentic circuits, switchable at source, without compromise or digital tricks.

In Vintage mode, the UT Twin87 adopts a direct polarisation of the capsule by the phantom power supply, faithful to the very first generations of microphones of this type. This architecture produces a rounder reproduction, slightly softer at the top end of the spectrum, with a natural tolerance of transients and a particularly flattering texture on vocals, strings and close miking. The result favours musicality and coherence, without harshness.

In Modern mode, the capsule is biased at a higher voltage via a dedicated FET circuit, as on more recent versions of the original design. The output level rises, the response becomes more direct, with better readability at the top end of the spectrum and a greater sense of proximity. This configuration is ideal for today's productions looking for articulation, precision and presence in the mix.

The UT Twin87 is based on a proprietary UT-K87 capsule with double diaphragm and double backplate, machined from solid brass and gold-plated with 24-carat gold on 6-micron Mylar film. Each capsule is assembled in a controlled environment to guarantee exemplary consistency from one microphone to the next. The output transformer, custom-wound in the USA, uses large-section nickel laminations to provide high dynamic reserve and three-dimensional reproduction without low-frequency compression.

Designed as a true studio tool, the UT Twin87 also incorporates a high-pass filter, a switchable attenuator and an RF filter that can be activated or deactivated depending on the environment. The solid nickel-plated brass construction, manual assembly and rigorous selection of components confirm the UT Twin87's vocation: to offer a reference microphone that is versatile, coherent and durable, capable of covering an extremely wide range of uses without ever losing its sonic identity.
