Presentation
ViLabs Audio, a publisher based in France and the USA, has built up a strong reputation for developing virtual pianos, a particularly difficult task when the requirements are so high.
With True Keys: Pianos, ViLabs Audio has recorded each of the 3 pianos in the collection with 3 microphones placed in the piano, on the side of the piano and at pianist level. You can then choose to use a single microphone, 2 or all 3, mixing them as you wish.
Each microphone configuration has been chosen for its versatility and suitability for all styles of playing. Close mics (in the piano) have a punchy modern sound with a wide stereo image and deep bass. Player offers the pianist's perspective with more distance and plenty of hammer-ons. Side is a stereo ribbon mic offering a warmer tone and a more even response. The Mix position is a combination of all the mics for a fast, low-processor-resource option.
True Keys: Pianos brings together 3 pianos that cover the majority of composers' needs in terms of tonal variety:
- True Keys American delivers the majestic sound of the 2.74m Steinway D © concert grand. With powerful bass, robust attack and deep chords, this versatile instrument can outperform a full orchestra or stand out in a busy mix. It also has a delicate, mellow and rich dark side, especially when played with the stereo side of the ribbon pickup.
- True Keys Italian is the largest piano in this collection and has the most brilliant sound. Often crowned the best piano in the world, the Fazioli F308 © has a staggering length of 3.10m, the instrument is very powerful and has rich harmonics. The Una Corda pedal is particularly expressive, allowing you to switch instantly from a soft forte to a thunderous fortissimo, with an even tone throughout the register.
- True Keys German puts you at the keys of the superb Bechstein semi-concert grand © it's the shortest of the True Keys piano collection at around 2.25m. These pianos are known for their precise sound, clear tones and deep bass. It will take up less space in your mix, but played dry and aggressive it will come out better. It's the best choice among True Key pianos when you need a smooth sound.
