Yamaha - YDS-122

The Yamaha YDS-122 digital saxophone utilises a breath-controlled digital sound generation system to maintain an expressive connection with the instrument. Its sensor analyses the air pressure applied to modulate the intensity and timbre of the notes. This design allows musicians to explore musical nuances with a responsive playing experience. For musicians seeking an expressive electronic saxophone, this approach offers an appealing foundation.

With 85 sounds available, the YDS-122 broadens horizons far beyond the traditional saxophone. The 56 presets dedicated to soprano, alto, tenor and baritone saxophones cover a range of instrumental timbres, complemented by sounds of the flute, shakuhachi and electronic instruments. This diversity allows you to explore varied arrangements or breathe new life into a musical part. The wind-controlled MIDI controller will appeal to musicians keen to explore new sonic textures.

The 15-level volume control and headphone output allow you to adapt your listening experience to different environments. The auxiliary socket also accepts an external audio source, such as a smartphone, so you can play along to musical accompaniment. The Yamaha digital saxophone is therefore suitable for individual practice and comparative listening, without the noise levels associated with an acoustic instrument. A welcome solution when the walls have a say in the matter.

The YDS Controller app provides access to the instrument’s settings and sound processing via a visual interface. It allows you to adjust parameters with precision and modify fingering to suit your playing preferences. This customisation will appeal to saxophonists wishing to adapt their digital instrument to their own playing style.

To practise a piece, the free Rec’n’Share app allows you to play audio files stored on a mobile device, change the tempo, repeat a specific passage and add a suitable metronome track. It can also be used to record a performance as audio or video, and then share it online.
