The Zildjian K Cluster Crash 16" isn't about producing a clean, perfectly smooth crash. Here, it's all about character, texture and a rawer sound than on a classic crash. From the very first hit, you can hear that very special 'dirty' side, with a fast attack, a trashy blast and dark harmonics that are sometimes reminiscent of a small china or certain effects cymbals.
Its 16" format and Thin thickness make for an extremely fast response. The cymbal opens immediately under the stick and then disappears fairly quickly, helping to place explosive accents without saturating the whole mix. In a modern rock, fusion, metal, post-rock or even electro-acoustic setup, it easily adds a different colour to traditional crashes.
Cluster hammering plays a huge part in this sonic personality. The extra hammer marks create more complex and irregular frequencies, giving that famous dirty, textured edge. The unmachined bell also adds a drier, darker touch to the overall behaviour.
