Presentation
The Avantone MixCube Passive Black is designed as a control tool rather than a comfort loudspeaker. Their objective is simple: to immediately reveal the imbalances in a mix, particularly in the critical midrange zone, where the legibility of vocals, guitars and main elements is at stake. Used as a pair, they enable coherent stereo work while maintaining this deliberately limited approach to bass and treble.
Inspired by the famous studio 'cubes' used for decades, the passive MixCubes take this concept and bring it up to date. Avantone has completely redesigned the driver, developing a proprietary 5.25-inch transducer with a cast aluminium chassis. The New Zealand paper pulp cone, reinforced with mica fibres, combines rigidity and lightness to ensure a fast, controlled response. The motor assembly, based on low-carbon steel components and a military-grade magnet, ensures excellent consistency from one unit to the next.
The thick MDF sealed cabinet limits parasitic resonances and contributes to the precision of the sound message. The absence of complex crossovers and the deliberately reduced signal path mean that the mix can be read directly, without embellishment. The terminal blocks accept stripped cables as well as forks or banana plugs, making them easy to integrate into any studio configuration.
The base of each loudspeaker incorporates a neoprene insulating support and a standard 5/8"-27 screw thread, allowing installation on a microphone stand when desk space is limited. In a pair configuration, the MixCube Passive Black becomes a formidable tool for validating a mix before broadcast, as a complement to a main monitoring system.
