To find out more...
Marcus Miller has often explained that his compositional work begins with the search for a simple rhythmic motif. From this cell, he gradually builds harmonies, arrangements and melodic variations. This method, very different from purely harmonic writing, puts the groove at the centre of the creative process. It comes from his experience in funk and R&B, where repetition and rhythmic tension are essential. This approach gives his tracks an instantly recognisable identity and a musical effectiveness that works just as well in the studio as it does on stage.
