Preamps

SPL's Gainstation 1 AD is a single-channel tube/transistor microphone preamp and A/D converter, 24 bit/192kHz. Now more than ever, your input signal needs to sound as good as possible, and the end result will be determined by the quality of your recorded tracks. It's vital to tackle this problem right from the preamplification stage, in order to get a good quality signal right from the start. With a good input signal, there is less tendency to equalise and compress the sound, and all processing becomes superfluous. Instruments, vocals, whatever you connect to the Gain Station 1 AD of SPL, will take on considerable scope and quality.

Digital EQ and other aspects of mixing can't compete with the open, transparent sound of the best analogue tools. So now, more than ever, you need your input signal to sound its best.

The end result depends very much on the quality of the recorded tracks, no matter how much you process them. Signals that are lifeless and lacking in dynamics are often over-processed with equalizers, compressors and the like to compensate for these weaknesses. It's an often laborious digital process that doesn't always deliver the expected results.

Its distinctive feature, apart from the clear, limpid sound it produces, is a total gain of 95dB!

Designed in a compact case, SPL's Gainstation 1 AD can be easily transported and ergonomically integrated into any situation. The result is a self-contained piece of equipment that doesn't need to be rack-mounted, and offers several advantages: permanently accessible inputs and outputs, easy placement next to your computer or close to any microphone.

Musicians can place the GainStation 1 on a rack or on an amp. This way, cabling can finally be shortened, and quality cables no longer need to be miles long.

The integrated A/D converter on the Gainstation 1 AD offers an S/P-DIF output with coaxial and optical connectors in parallel. The heart of the module is a 24-bit converter with a variable sampling frequency of up to 192 kHz.

High-precision quartz oscillators ensure an accurate, low-jitter master clock. The internal sampling frequency can be switched between 44.1, 48, 88.2 and 96 kHz. The other sampling frequencies (32, 176, 4 and 192 kHz) are set by external synchronisation. The converter can be synchronised with other digital devices via an S/P-DIF input. The internal oscillators are automatically disabled when an external clock signal is present to avoid interference.
  • SPL Gainstation 1 AD Single-channel tube/transistor mic preamp and A/D converter, 24 bit/192kHz.
  • Class A discrete operational amplifiers to avoid the use of industrially manufactured universal components. GainStation's operational amplifiers operate with a voltage of 60 V instead of the usual 30 V, guaranteeing much greater dynamic range.
  • Amplifier slew rate of 200 V/microsecond. This very high value ensures clean reproduction of high frequencies and the fastest transients in the signal.
  • Direct coupling over most of the signal flow to avoid the use of capacitors that colour the signal.
  • Optimised architecture for the shortest possible signal flow and large ground areas for low impedance and reliable shielding.
  • All switching functions use enclosed relays with gold-plated contacts.
  • Resistors selected by listening test with 0.1% tolerance over the entire signal flow.
  • Complex power supply with double shielding, each voltage having its own winding and regulation. To lay the foundations for good audio quality, the power supply plays a vital role that is never given enough importance.
  • Tube stage with MKP film capacitors and Sovtek 12 AX7 LPS lamp for clear, dynamic sound.
  • Note: GainStation 1 can be ordered with or without an AN converter card. Users will not be able to add the conversion board themselves and will have to go through SPL or an authorised technical centre. However, the digital option can be fitted by the user to all other SPL products.
