SPL - Venos Red

The SPL Venos Red is aimed at engineers looking for a tube bus compressor capable of combining analogue character with very precise control. Unlike conventional designs that are limited to a few settings, this model uses advanced variable-bias architecture to adapt the finesse of the compression to the nature of the signal.

All the controls are based on notched potentiometers, giving immediate access to the parameters while allowing exact recall of the settings, a feature often essential in a professional context.

The dynamics of the Venos Red are built around the trio of Input, Threshold and Bias, each adjustable in 41 positions. These three parameters determine how the tube stage reacts, both in terms of intensity and texture.

Bias plays a decisive role here: by influencing the voltage applied to the lamp gate, it modifies the way in which the gate limits the signal. The device incorporates three types of rectifier circuits - germanium, LED and silicon - which change the way the compressor handles attack and release, giving access to different dynamic signatures.

The behaviour of the sidechain can then be fine-tuned using the Linear, Modern and Vintage modes. Linear avoids overreaction at extreme low frequencies, Modern isolates the middle zone of the mix more, while Vintage applies a curve inspired by extensive studio listening.


The two modes, Focus and Punch, work differently: they rely on a specialised internal circuit that changes the compression curve. Focus reinforces the midrange spectrum with a very controlled response, while Punch accentuates the impact and presence of the signal without making it aggressive.

The external sidechain insert takes things even further. An equaliser can be inserted to shape the response or control the compression from another source. Processing can then be completed using the AirBass/Tape selector, two passive signatures inspired by renowned analogue circuits.

The use of internal 120V technology is one of the major features of the device. Thanks to its very high operating voltage, Venos Red has a real dynamic reserve and remains stable even at high levels. The black chassis, aluminium front panel and Neutrik connectors ensure durable integration in a professional rack.
