In its new Volt 4 Gen 2 audio interface, Universal Audio combines 32-bit/192 kHz conversion and up to 127 dB of dynamic range in a USB interface designed to preserve the nuances of a take with great precision, from vocal recording to the detailed monitoring of a complex mix.
The two preamps offer 60 dB of gain and three character settings – Warmth, Focus and Shine – along with independent 48 V phantom power. This design makes it easy to adapt the sound character to microphones, guitars and other sources connected to the dedicated inputs, with a sufficiently wide range to vary recording approaches.
Its comprehensive architecture combines Mic/Line inputs, two Hi-Z instrument inputs, MIDI In and Out, as well as an optical ADAT or S/PDIF input capable of adding up to eight digital channels. This range of connections means the Volt 4 Gen 2 fits naturally into a setup combining instruments, controllers, synthesisers and external devices, with plenty of scope for expansion as the audio system grows.
To keep an eye on levels and settings, Universal Audio has equipped the Volt 4 Gen 2 with a colour Smart Display, featuring a clear layout that makes it easy to monitor signals.
Auto-Gain quickly adjusts input levels, whilst clipping protection monitors signal peaks, forming a cohesive system that minimises repetitive adjustments and ensures an accurate readout of the work in progress. Universal Audio combines automation and visual control here without turning the front panel into an aeroplane cockpit, which is a real bonus when multiple sources are coming in simultaneously.
Loopback functions extend the scope of application to podcasts, live broadcasts and content creation, with routing of computer audio into the workflow. Integration with UAD Console and LUNA also adds signal management and low-latency monitoring capabilities, ensuring a smoother organisation of the various stages of audio production.
