Universal Audio’s Volt 4P Max audio interface forms a USB production hub designed to accommodate multiple sources simultaneously, with 12 inputs and 6 outputs, MIDI connections, a digital expansion slot and dedicated monitoring outputs. The unit is suitable for recording multiple musicians as well as for production work, with an architecture that allows for future studio expansion. This connectivity also facilitates the integration of synthesisers, controllers and digital equipment within a single workstation.

Its four preamps offer 60 dB of gain and three harmonic characters – Warmth, Focus and Shine – combined with Max processing, which provides six compression presets for vocals, guitar and bass. This combination creates 18 distinct sound character profiles, with noise-free processing applied directly during the take. This allows you to shape the tone and dynamics right from the recording stage, using an approach inspired by classic analogue processing.

The 32-bit/192 kHz converters achieve a claimed dynamic range of up to 127 dB, ensuring detailed reproduction during recording and monitoring. Two headphone outputs, two switchable monitor sets and studio-optimised output levels also facilitate sound monitoring, from initial monitoring through to mixing. This architecture is also suitable for set-ups where several people need to monitor the audio work without disrupting the main routing.

The colour Smart Display brings together useful information on inputs, levels and gain reduction, providing an immediate visual readout of the settings. Auto-Gain quickly adjusts recording levels, whilst clipping protection minimises unpleasant surprises during signal fluctuations, ensuring that the creative process remains the priority. These features also provide clearer control during recordings where multiple sources are active simultaneously, without the need for excessive fiddling with the interface.

Universal Audio has included a USB hub that also connects and powers external MIDI devices, making it easier to organise a more comprehensive production setup. The interface thus becomes a central hub for bringing together electronic instruments, digital extensions and control accessories into a cohesive configuration.

The loopback and talkback functions expand the possibilities for podcasting, streaming and content creation, with routing of computer audio to the production environment and a built-in microphone for communication with guests. With the Volt 4P Max sound card, Universal Audio combines what is described as a robust build with deep integration with UAD Console and LUNA, including the ability to recall settings and low-latency monitor mixes.
