The Universal Audio Volt 1 Gen 2 sound card is a 2-in/2-out solution for recording vocals and instruments with a complete signal chain, from the input to monitoring, in a USB-powered format that is equally suited to studio and mobile use.
Universal Audio has opted for a Tone Shaping preamp featuring 60 dB of gain and three sound profiles – Warmth, Focus and Shine – inspired by various analogue approaches. This range allows you to give vocal or instrument takes a distinct character, with simple controls that are easy to use right from the start.
The 32-bit / 192 kHz audio conversion preserves a significant amount of information during digitisation, with a dynamic range of up to 127 dB depending on the configuration. The studio-quality headphone output completes the package, offering precise control over takes and mixing, with sufficiently clear reproduction to monitor signal details and take a step back to consider production choices, even when the rest of the equipment is kept deliberately minimal.
The design of this second generation retains its user-friendly approach whilst incorporating features designed to speed up take preparation, including Auto-Gain, clipping protection and an intelligent colour display to visually track settings and levels. On-board processing also adds shaping and compression capabilities depending on the model in the range, but the specific features of the Volt 1 Gen 2 remain centred on the Tone Shaping preamp, 32-bit/192 kHz conversion, Loopback and Universal Audio software integration
The Loopback function adds an interesting dimension to digital content workflows, as it allows audio from the computer to be routed through the connected sources for managing podcasts, live streams or video production. Compatibility with Mac, Windows, iPad and iPhone also broadens the range of available working environments, with a class-compliant USB connection and USB bus power under the specified conditions. For Windows, the ASIO driver remains available via UA Connect, ensuring seamless integration with audio software.
