What sets the EMG 40JAX X Series apart is its balance between the modernity of an active pickup and the tactile sensitivity of a passive one. It uses the extended 102 mm format to fit 5-string basses, but remains true to the spirit of jazz pickups: finesse, articulation and nuance.
The Alnico magnets give a smoother response than ceramic magnets, with a pleasant warmth in the bass and openness in the treble. The back winding enhances the impact of attacks, which makes all the difference for rhythmically demanding styles such as funk, slap, back and forth or even some of the more technical rock tracks.
The pickup remains highly responsive to touch: it respects the nuances of finger-style playing, remains punchy when slapping and retains clarity even in fast crossovers or tapping passages. At the same time, the X Series preamp expands the dynamic range without artificially compressing the signal: every note breathes, even in a dense mix.
