Designed for bassists looking for punch without sacrificing control, the EMG 40PX-5 is a real solution for boosting a 5-string bass. It takes the DNA of the famous P pickup, but adapts it to the soapbar format, with revised electronics.
Its X Series preamp provides more dynamics, more nuance, and a livelier overall sound than traditional active pickups. Attacks are straightforward, notes well articulated, and the bottom end of the spectrum remains dense and clean.
This pickup shines in styles where precision is key: funk, slap, modern pop or technical metal. It reacts quickly to attack and reproduces the nuances of finger-style playing without drooling. Its ceramic magnet construction ensures good clarity even in the high frequencies, while retaining a warm base.
An interesting detail: the orientation of the pickup with the treble closer to the neck, as on Spector or Yamaha basses, gives a slightly different sound to Fender configurations. If your aim is to be more responsive and get a sound that follows your playing to the letter, this pickup can really make a difference.
