The EMG 81-8H Black Chrome is a high-output active pickup designed for 8-string guitars. It features a ceramic and steel magnet and an internal 9V preamp to ensure a constant signal, even at high gain.
On palm mute riffs tuned to drop E, it produces a precise attack and compact bass. When played fast (alternate picking, sweeps, tapping), it retains note-to-note definition, even through dense saturation. Its frequency response is linear, with no screeching highs or slobbering lows, making it suitable for both fluid solos and very dry rhythms.
It also handles effects very well, with no hiss or loss of clarity, whether on a studio chain or a live pedalboard. Installation is via the EMG solderless system, compatible with active EQs, split-coils, gain boosts and in-house switches.
Its closed format reduces interference and makes it easy to integrate into an electrically-charged stage environment. The 81-8H is designed to handle high levels of gain, while preserving the precision of the playing, even on guitars with an extended range.
