Neumann - M 49 V Set
Neumann M 49 V Set, Remote switchable tube microphone. Neumann has succeeded in re-releasing the microphone that made so many hits of the 50s and 60s "sound", in its original version! Contact us to choose from the various manufacturing options available.
Presentation
Choosing an M 49 V means choosing an exceptional microphone. Its tube and large-diaphragm capsule give it a warm, silky sound, with rich harmonics and lots of depth (you can hear the depth, the pick-ups are not 'flat').
Remote directivity control is THE feature that enabled it to invade recording and broadcasting studios from its launch in 1951 without even needing advertising. Today, remote control is less widely used, but the sound signature remains unrivalled, hence Neumann's choice of this reissue. And since remote control of directionality is no longer essential, Neumann is offering, as an option (to be determined with your adviser in shop or by telephone), to receive your microphone fixed in cardioid mode (it is only possible to change this choice by means of an intervention invoiced by Neumann after-sales service). Why offer this option?
- because it increases sensitivity by 2 dB
- because it reduces the noise level by 3 dB
- because it gives it a closer and more magical effect, especially when recording voices (spoken or sung)
- because the cardioid mode corresponds to the vast majority of recordings made in most studios
Even if you opt for fixed cardioid mode, you'll still need to use the NM V because it also acts as a power supply.
At the output of the NM V, the audio is output at line level (no need for a 48V power supply at your console or audio interface).
Although today's productions are essentially digital, an analogue tube microphone retains an unrivalled magic and flavour. With this new revision, Neumann is offering a second option: the extension of low-frequency sensitivity by lowering the frequency of the high-pass filter from the original 30 Hz to an unprecedented 12 Hz to meet specific modern needs.
Neumann wishes to establish a special relationship with the users of this prestigious microphone. So, in order for your order to be validated by the manufacturer, we will need to send them your contact details with your written agreement and give a few details about the setting in which you will be making your recordings. That's why we can't stock this microphone: it has to be made to order, with the options you choose. The wait may then last several months, but your patience will inevitably be rewarded!

The M 49 is a remarkable microphone in every way. As impressive as its physical appearance, its sound is incomparable. Thanks to its revolutionary technology, the M 49 has set new standards. The M 49 is a true Neumann legend.
Everything and much more
The objective itself was already immense: in the early 1950s, a reference microphone that was to replace all its predecessors was developed in cooperation with Nordwestdeutscher Rundfunk (North-West German Radio). Rather than having to replace the capsule to change the polar pattern, the M 49 allowed the polar pattern to be controlled remotely from the power supply, and continuously. With its balanced frequency response in all polar patterns, from omnidirectional to cardioid to figure-8, including intermediate settings, the M 49 is a truly universal microphone: orchestral, piano, trumpet or vocal, it is suitable for recordings of all kinds, always at the highest level. That's why the M 49 was, and still is, in great demand. No other Neumann microphone of the tube era was produced over a longer period: from 1951 to 1971. Countless legendary recordings, from cool jazz to modern pop, bear its elegant signature sound. The M 49 is an inseparable part of the Neumann DNA.
The cream of the crop
At last, the legend is available again! The M 49 V is a reissue of the last revision c. The M 49 has been continuously improved over the years: the original Hiller MSC2 lamp was replaced by the Telefunken AC701, then by the AC701k. This and other circuit modifications have improved the signal-to-noise ratio, dynamic range and immunity to interference. At the same time, its broadcast version, the M 249, was released with a connector protected against radio frequencies.
The M 49 V uses the same circuit as the M 49 c, but with an even lower noise mini-lamp. As high-frequency interference has increased considerably due to mobile phone networks and WiFi, the RF-protected connector was adopted from the M 249 onwards.
The included NM V directionality control unit is designed to automatically supply the optimum heating voltage to both the M 49 V and any older M 49; and it automatically adapts to the local mains voltage. In addition, the M 49 V package includes the iconic bracket mounting, whose flexible positioning has contributed to the M 49's enormous popularity. The M 49 V set comes in a high-quality case which, like the rest of the microphone, is handmade in Germany.
