In the world of modern synthesis, certain machines are fast becoming benchmarks for musicians and sound designers. The Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 clearly falls into this category. This new generation of the famous Iridium Desktop continues the evolution of the concept introduced by Waldorf with the Quantum and Iridium synthesizers, while opening up the field of sonic possibilities even further.

At the heart of the Iridium Desktop MK2 is Waldorf's iconic multi-engine architecture. This approach allows several synthesis methods to be combined in a single instrument to create complex, evolving textures. Each oscillator can exploit different forms of synthesis, allowing the construction of sounds ranging from atmospheric layers and experimental textures to deep bass and cinematic timbres.

The MK2 version introduces a new, more powerful CPU card, along with expanded RAM memory and flash storage. This technical upgrade means it can accommodate more samples, opening up new possibilities for sound synthesis and processing. As a result, sound designers have an even wider field of experimentation in which to build their sound worlds.

One of the most striking new features of the MK2 is the Per-Note-Parameter-Locks function, developed in collaboration with electronic artist Aphex Twin. This function allows up to sixteen different parameter variations to be assigned to each note played. In concrete terms, each note can have its own sonic behaviour, with distinct oscillator, effect or modulation settings. This approach transforms sound programming into a veritable field of exploration, where each note can become a unique event.

The MK2 also introduces a new synthesis method called Seeds. Inspired by wavetable synthesis, this technique is based on the dynamic generation of sound shapes from sub-oscillators called 'Seeds'. These elements can be combined using modulations such as ring modulation or frequency modulation, enriched by noise and other sound sources. The result is complex, evolving timbral trajectories.

The machine also benefits from extended multitimbral capability. Thanks to the increased memory, the Iridium Desktop MK2 can now work with up to four layers simultaneously. In addition to the traditional layering and split modes, new modes such as round-robin and random-robin can be used to introduce natural variations between notes and enrich sound textures.

The synthesiser also offers additional creative control with the Flavour knob, first introduced on the Protein synthesiser. This parameter adds micro-variations in timing, pitch or timbre to bring more life and movement to sounds.

The Iridium Desktop MK2's comprehensive connectivity means it can be easily integrated into a modern studio. Audio inputs and outputs, MIDI DIN ports, USB, CV inputs and analogue synchronisation allow it to interact with modular synthesizers, sequencers or a computer environment.

With its advanced synthesis architecture, new multi-timbral capabilities and sophisticated modulation tools, the Waldorf Iridium Desktop MK2 is aimed at musicians, producers and sound designers who want to explore deep sonic territories and create unique musical textures.
