Wampler - Ego 76 Compressor

The Wampler Ego 76 Compressor takes the basics of studio compression and adapts them to a pedal format, drawing direct inspiration from the workings of 1176-type FET compressors. The aim is not just to reduce level differences, but to add extra coherence and presence to the signal.

The FET circuit provides rapid response and fine transient management, resulting in reactive compression without loss of definition. This approach preserves the character of the playing while providing a more stable foundation, useful for both rhythmic and lead playing.

The pedal features a full set of controls, with settings for tone, attack, release, level, compress and blend. The blend knob applies parallel compression by feeding back part of the original signal, helping to preserve attack while adding sustain. The tone control adjusts the overall brightness to suit different instruments or amps.

The attack and release controls offer a wider range of adjustment than on a conventional pedal, allowing the behaviour of the compression to be shaped to suit the context. This flexibility brings it closer to being used as studio equipment.

With its top-panel connections and pedalboard-friendly format, it can be easily integrated into a variety of configurations. It can remain permanently activated to structure the signal or be used occasionally to refine certain parts.
