Presentation
A simple open-string chord is enough to hear what the D’Angelico Excel Josh Turner Tammany has to offer folk and country guitarists: an Orchestra Model body without a cutaway, designed for full-bodied sound. Its solid Sitka spruce top produces a warm tone, complemented by a laminated mahogany back and sides that maintain a rounded bass response.
The mahogany neck, joined with a dovetail joint and shaped to a C-profile, has a scale length of 635 mm, allowing the bass strings to breathe. The ebony fingerboard features 20 medium vintage nickel-silver frets, marked with small mother-of-pearl diamonds, on a 406.4 mm radius. An open-pore satin finish covers the body and neck, beneath a double-action truss rod.
The Throwback Scroll-Style headstock features Grover 109 Super Rotomatic tuners, tuned to hold their tuning from gig to gig, whilst a 44.45 mm bone nut and a Stairstep-shaped ebony bridge anchor the set of D’Addario EXP-16 strings in 12-53 gauge. The antique bronze hardware is reminiscent of carefully restored barn guitars.
Amplified by a passive JourneyTek piezo with three pickups and a standard mono output, this Josh Turner-signed Excel performs just as well on stage as it does in the studio, and comes supplied with a gig bag. Since 1932, D’Angelico has drawn inspiration from John D’Angelico’s workshop on Kenmare Street, where barely thirty-five instruments were built each year – a legacy that still informs this road-ready Natural model.

Spotlight on
D'Angelico is a New York brand of electric guitars that has existed since 1938. First went unnoticed because the guitars were manufactured only by hand in a very small workshop by two luthiers; it is in 2011, at a show at the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, that D'Angelico is noticed. Since then, D'Angelico guitars have been a real success thanks to their quality of manufacture and their price.
