D'Angelico Excel SS Amber The Excel SS Amber swaps the hollowbody design for a semi-hollow centre-block construction – a choice that makes all the difference on stage. Its two Seymour Duncan DA-59 and SH-4 humbuckers provide a comprehensive neck-and-bridge pairing, controlled by a 3-position selector switch and push/pull potentiometers.

Presentation
With the Excel SS Amber, D’Angelico presents a more refined variant of its New York range. The semi-hollow body, featuring a central block, suppresses the unwanted frequencies that plague large, hollow bodies: the bass end gains stability, feedback is reduced, and high volume remains under control on stage.
This precision is also reflected in the electronics. The two Seymour Duncan humbuckers – a DA-59 at the neck and an SH-4 at the bridge – offer two distinct tones activated by a 3-position selector switch, whilst the push/pull controls unlock wiring combinations ranging from rich vintage tones to a more contemporary bite. The 4-conductor wiring allows for this kind of switching without any signal loss.
The three-piece neck, shaped to a C-profile and fitted with a set-neck joint, tapers from 20 mm at the first fret to 22 mm at the twelfth: a slimmer grip than on the hollow-body models in the range, designed with the higher frets in mind. The ebony fingerboard, curved to a generous radius of 406.4 mm, flattens the curvature and facilitates wide bends across the 22 Jescar 47/104 frets, whilst the 42.86 mm Tusq nut stabilises the tuning from the moment you strike the string.
The gold-plated Tune-O-Matic bridge, combined with Grover 509 locking tuners, locks in the tuning even after a forceful bend. Supplied in a gig bag, the Excel SS Amber is equally at home in the rehearsal room and on tour.

Spotlight on
D'Angelico is a New York brand of electric guitars that has existed since 1938. First went unnoticed because the guitars were manufactured only by hand in a very small workshop by two luthiers; it is in 2011, at a show at the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, that D'Angelico is noticed. Since then, D'Angelico guitars have been a real success thanks to their quality of manufacture and their price.
