D'Angelico - Excel SS Tour Solid Black

The D’Angelico Excel SS Tour Solid Black is based on a simple premise: black is not a colour, it is a filter. Everything that matters stands out. The single-cutaway semi-hollow body with a central block, finished in a glossy Solid Black finish over a laminated maple top, back and sides, absorbs light and draws the eye to what produces the sound. With a depth of 44.45 mm and a width of 381 mm, this body size sits between a full-body and a solid-body guitar — offering enough volume for harmonics to breathe, and enough core material to sustain the note under the pick’s stroke.
The three-piece C-profile neck, glued directly to the body, provides direct sound transmission with no dead zone between the neck wood and the body wood. Its thickness ranges from 20 mm at the first fret to 22 mm at the twelfth — a progression that supports the hand without straining it. The ebony fingerboard, with a scale length of 304.8 mm, featuring three-strip binding and acrylic ‘Small Diamonds’ inlays, glides smoothly under the fingers with the characteristic density of this wood. The 22 Medium Jumbo Blacksmith DHP-27H frets allow for powerful playing without crushing the fingers in position, and the dual-action truss rod keeps the neck straight whatever the season. The Graphtech NuBone XL nut (42.86 mm) reduces friction when tuning and stabilises the 635 mm scale length right through to the satin nickel Tune-O-Matic bridge with Stopbar tailpiece.
Two Supro Bolt Bucker pickups with satin nickel covers provide a deliberate contrast. The Alnico II at the neck rounds off the transients and deepens the mid-range — it’s perfect for club jazz or slow blues. The Alnico V at the bridge sharpens the attack and tightens the high frequencies — it’s perfect for classic rock, garage rock and punchy riffs. The 3-position toggle switch and 500k potentiometers control the two ebony control knobs — volume and tone — positioned as an exact mirror image of the fingerboard. The satin nickel Grover Vintage Deluxe tuners with cream-coloured knobs maintain tuning without drift. The Throwback Scroll-Style headstock, featuring 5-ply binding, the D’Angelico New York logo and an acrylic Excel shield, along with an ebony Skyscraper truss rod cover, embodies the New York Art Deco aesthetic down to the most subtle detail.
