Golden Age Audio - PRE 573 MKIII

The Golden Age Audio PRE-573 MKIII is a mono mic, line and DI preamplifier in 500 Series format, designed to recapture the sonic aesthetics of classic British consoles while benefiting from the modern flexibility of the API format. A direct descendant of the PRE-73, this model transposes the architecture and musicality of the legendary 1073 module into a compact chassis, without compromising on character or build quality.

The circuit is based on an entirely discrete analogue topology, with no integrated circuits in the audio path. Resistors, capacitors and transistors are carefully selected, with tantalum capacitors in the audio signal and star grounding to ensure stability and low noise. Input and output are transformer-balanced, providing a dense, natural sound and the ability to handle high levels without harshness. The output transformer is fully floating and capable of delivering up to +28 dBu, ensuring perfect integration into modern studio chains.

Total gain ranges from -10 to +80dB, with a main selection notched from 20 to 70dB, supplemented by an additional +5 or +10dB switch. This wide range makes it possible to use condenser microphones as well as dynamic or low-sensitivity ribbon microphones. The microphone input impedance is switchable between 300 and 1200 ohms, offering different interaction with the capsules and allowing tonal response to be fine-tuned according to the microphone used.

The PRE-573 MKIII incorporates two separate instrument inputs: a high-impedance active DI of around 1.5 MΩ, which passes through the input transformer for more pronounced coloration, and a passive DI of around 100 kΩ, ideal for active sources or synthesizers. This dual function allows the preamp's behaviour to be precisely matched to guitars, basses and electronic equipment.
