Presentation
The Golden Age Audio Pre-73 DLX MkII represents the culmination of the PRE-73 range, designed as a version as close as possible to the architecture and sonic behaviour of the original 1073 preamplifier. After more than ten years of unchanged production, this MkII version retains the essence of the DLX model while improving key elements relating to ergonomics, reliability and electrical compliance.
The circuit is based on an entirely discrete topology, with no integrated circuits in the audio path. Resistors, capacitors and transistors are implemented using traditional methods, in the spirit of classic British console engineering. The mic, line and line-out inputs are all transformer-balanced, with three separate transformers, each optimised for its function. This approach provides true stage separation, excellent level stability and a dense, musical sound signature.
The sound signature of the Pre-73 DLX MkII is characterised by a solid bass, full-bodied and balanced midrange, and an open top end without aggression. This colour, which has become a standard in countless productions over the decades, is equally suited to vocals, guitars, percussion, brass or electronic sources.
The preamp offers sufficient reserve gain to drive low-sensitivity passive microphones, including ribbon microphones, without the need for an external preamplifier. Switching to line mode automatically reduces the gain by around 30dB, making it easy to integrate the Pre-73 DLX MkII into an existing processing chain, either as an input or insert.
The integrated AIR equaliser has two positions, 3 or 6 dB at 30 kHz, providing a feeling of openness and airiness that is particularly effective on vocals or acoustic instruments. The 6dB/octave low-cut filter, adjustable over two frequencies, controls unwanted resonances or mechanical vibrations at the input stage.
The high-impedance instrument input allows direct connection of guitars and basses, while the switchable microphone impedance allows the load to be adapted to the microphone used, subtly modifying the tonal response. The front panel adopts a more vintage ergonomic design, with rectangular white switches and robust rockers.
