Presentation
The Golden Age Audio PRE-73 Jr MkII is a compact and accessible version of the famous PRE-73, designed to offer the essence of the 1073 sound in a reduced format, without compromising on analogue design. It is a mono microphone and instrument preamplifier using exclusively discrete components, with no integrated circuits or SMD components in the audio path, true to the philosophy of historic studio equipment.
The topology is based on a discrete Class A analogue circuit, using carefully selected resistors, capacitors and transistors. Input and output are transformer-balanced, each optimised for its function, resulting in the natural dynamic behaviour, progressive saturation and harmonic reproduction typical of British preamplifiers of the 70s. The printed circuit board is also prepared to accept a Carnhill transformer at the input for those who wish to take this approach even further.
The gain is adjustable from 20 to 70dB via a notched selector, offering precise and reproducible control. This gain range allows you to work with dynamic or static microphones as well as higher level sources. The microphone input impedance is switchable between 300 and 1200 ohms, a setting that directly influences the response of the microphones and allows the sonic character to be adjusted according to the source used.
The PRE-73 Jr MkII also incorporates essential tools inspired by the original modules, including a switchable +3 or +6 dB AIR high-frequency boost centred around 30 kHz, providing openness and a sense of presence without aggression. A 6dB/octave low-cut filter, selectable around 40Hz or 150Hz, helps to control unwanted bass as soon as it is picked up. 48 V phantom power and phase inversion are available on the front panel for immediate use in the studio.
