To find out more...
Marcus Miller began playing the clarinet before becoming famous as a bass player. This early training strongly influences his melodic approach to electric bass. Many of his lines have a wind-instrument-like fluidity, with long, lilting phrases. This particular sensibility sets Marcus Miller apart from many bassists who focus solely on technique. Even in the highly dynamic funk passages, he retains a real harmonic and melodic logic. His playing also reflects his solid musical training and in-depth understanding of arrangements. This combination of groove, virtuosity and musicality explains why he remains an essential reference in the world of contemporary jazz fusion.
