The Digiface AES combines the main digital audio connections used in studios and sound installations – AES/EBU, SPDIF and ADAT – in a single unit. Two mic/line inputs, two line outputs and a headphone output complete the package, whilst its standalone operation and TotalMix FX mean it can be used with a computer or as a standalone converter, mixer or independent monitoring system.

Presentation
Combining several digital audio formats within a single interface often avoids the need for multiple converters and intermediate devices. RME’s Digiface AES, a multi-format USB 2.0 audio interface, takes precisely this approach by combining AES/EBU, coaxial SPDIF, optical SPDIF and ADAT, along with two mic/line inputs, two analogue outputs and a headphone output.
The two universal inputs feature digitally controlled preamps offering 75 dB of gain in 1 dB steps. A relay-controlled PAD allows for the handling of higher input levels, whilst the 48 V phantom power can be activated independently on each channel. This analogue section can therefore accommodate both microphones and line-level sources.
The digital section allows the various interfaces to operate simultaneously. AES/EBU and SPDIF support both professional and consumer sources, whilst the two TOSLINK ports provide ADAT connectivity for up to 8 channels at 48 kHz, with S/MUX for higher sampling rates. A built-in sample rate converter can be assigned to one of the three relevant digital inputs in order to combine sources operating at different frequencies or to resolve certain synchronisation issues.
However, the Digiface AES does not necessarily require a computer. Its colour display, encoder and four controls provide direct access to settings. Six configurations can be stored in the unit and quickly recalled, allowing the unit to be switched from one configuration to another in just a few steps.
When used with a computer, TotalMix FX handles the independent routing and mixing of inputs and playback channels to the physical outputs. The system offers independent stereo sub-mixes and a full Control Room section. TotalMix Remote also allows you to control the mixer from a computer or an iOS device.
With SteadyClock FS, its integrated SRC, Class Compliant operation and the option to power it directly via USB, the Digiface AES can thus serve as a connection hub for a wide variety of digital and analogue sources, without being limited to a single type of production.
