The Supro Royale 1x12 arrives with one certainty etched into its chassis: 50 watts drawn from two 5881 valves in a push-pull configuration – a design that places this amp firmly in the category of professional-grade equipment, not rehearsal toys. The 5881s — a military-grade variant of the 6L6 — deliver saturation with a solidity that the 2 × EL34s lack, a dense, round tone that grows in body without becoming harsh as the volume rises.
The preamp stage, comprising three 12AX7s, one 12AT7 and one 12DW7, builds up several layers of gain before the output. The 12DW7 — an asymmetrical double triode — modulates the harmonic structure in a way that’s distinct from an all-12AX7 preamp, and it is in this detail that the Royale’s character is rooted. The Supro BD12 12-inch speaker completes the system with a driver tailored specifically to this circuit, without the compromises of a generic pairing. The poplar cabinet, clad in Black Scandia Tolex and featuring a gold-plated grille, contains this volume of air without unwanted resonance — 22.2 kg in 520 × 476 × 241 mm, a respectable weight for this power level.
The control section — Volume, Boost, Treble, Mid, Bass, Reverb Level, Reverb Dwell, Master — covers a wide range without any unnecessary features. The built-in effects loop isolates effects processing from the preamp chain, whilst the two 8-ohm outputs, two 4-ohm outputs and one 16-ohm output allow for a bespoke external cabinet setup. The three TS footswitch sockets each accommodate a single Supro footswitch (sold separately), for flexible on-stage control.
