Geezer Butler, born in Birmingham in 1949, is the bassist and principal lyricist of Black Sabbath, the founding band of heavy metal. His heavy, melodic bass playing has influenced generations of musicians. He has written dark, introspective lyrics for such classics as War Pigs, Iron Man and Paranoid. A fan of occult literature and science fiction, he integrated these themes into the band's universe. As well as Black Sabbath, he played in Heaven & Hell with Dio and Iommi, and founded his own solo project, GZR. A committed vegetarian, he is also a fervent defender of animal rights.
