Golden Age Audio - COMP 3A JR

The Golden Age Audio COMP-3A JR takes the sonic spirit and philosophy of the most sought-after vintage optical compressors and adapts them to a compact, accessible format. Its architecture is based on an entirely discrete signal path, with no integrated circuits in the main audio path, using only selected resistors, capacitors, diodes and transistors.

This deliberately traditional approach preserves a natural response, musical compression and gentle harmonic coloration, particularly appreciated on vocals, bass, guitars or acoustic instruments.

Unlike the standard COMP-3A, this JR version uses an integrated optocoupler for gain control. This technical choice enables smooth, progressive compression to be maintained, with a rapid attack down to around 1 ms, while guaranteeing a response dependent on the audio programme. The result is a lively compression that follows the dynamics of the signal without crushing it.

The ergonomics remain deliberately simple and effective. Two main controls, Gain Makeup and Gain Reduction, are all you need to sculpt the signal. A three-position TIME switch allows the attack and release times to be adapted to different styles and sources, with the possibility of further fine-tuning these behaviours via dedicated internal jumpers. This internal flexibility allows the COMP-3A JR to move from smooth, transparent control to more pronounced, always musical, compression.

Inputs and outputs are transformer-balanced, available in both XLR and TRS jacks, guaranteeing easy integration into all types of set-up, whether professional or semi-professional. A Link socket allows two units to be combined for coherent stereo operation. The external power supply helps isolate the audio circuits from electromagnetic fields and mains transformers, preserving the purity of the signal.
