Equalizer

The EQ-81 MK3 is a four-band analogue equaliser based on the EQ section of the classic Neve 1081. More flexible than a 1073-style, it combines precision, musicality and vintage character for both mixing and recording.

ARTICLE N° 115895
The Golden Age Audio EQ-81 MK3 takes its inspiration directly from the equalisation section of the legendary 1081 module, which appeared in the early 70s and was soon recognised for its greater versatility and precision than the 1073. Unlike simpler models, the EQ-81 adopts a 4-band architecture, offering finer control of the spectrum while retaining a resolutely analogue sound signature.

Its Class AB circuitry has been designed to reproduce a warm, punchy and musical sound, capable of adapting to vocals as well as acoustic or electric instruments or busses. The bass and treble can be configured as shelving or bell, while the two midrange bands operate as bell with a Hi-Q option for more precise targeting of certain frequencies. This flexibility makes the EQ-81 MK3 a more surgical tool than a 1073-style EQ, while retaining a pleasant and never clinical coloration.

The frequencies are stepped, covering an extended range from 33 Hz to 15 kHz, with a correction amplitude of up to ±18 dB on each band. Each section can also be completely deactivated, facilitating quick comparisons and progressive adjustments in mixing or subtle processing situations. The tantalum capacitors used in the EQ path contribute to this dense, slightly textured and instantly recognisable sound.

The EQ-81 MK3 can be used standalone or inserted directly into the insert of a compatible Golden Age preamplifier. Combined with a PRE-73 and mounted in a UNITE rack, it constitutes a true 1081-style 19-inch slice. The external power supply limits interference and contributes to the overall stability of the unit, while the robust construction ensures long-term reliable use in both home studio and professional environments.
