The Triton Audio FetHead Filter combines a clean gain of +27 dB with a 220 Hz high-pass filter to control excessive bass as soon as it is picked up. The result is a more balanced and readable signal, particularly useful with ribbon or dynamic microphones sensitive to proximity effect.

ARTICLE N° 122008
On some recordings, the problem is not just the signal level, but also the tonal balance. Ribbon microphones, in particular, can quickly accentuate low frequencies as the source gets closer. This phenomenon, known as the proximity effect, can give body to a voice, but it can also make a signal difficult to use.

The FetHead Filter offers a direct response to this situation by combining amplification and processing. It adds its own gain, while incorporating a high-pass filter calibrated at 220 Hz. The aim is not to transform the sound, but to control the accumulation of bass at the input to the audio chain, even before any downstream equalisation.

The special feature of this filter is that it is integrated indirectly into the amplification circuit. It acts on the components that define the gain rather than being placed directly in the signal path. This approach preserves the sound quality of the FetHead while introducing a progressive attenuation of low frequencies, at a rate of 6 dB per octave.

In practice, the results are immediate. The signal gains in clarity, the bass becomes more controlled and the whole spectrum finds its place more easily in a mix. On a spoken or sung voice, this limits the effects of excessive proximity. On instruments or ambient recordings, it prevents the build-up of undesirable bass.

Like the other models in the range, the FetHead Filter is inserted directly between the microphone and the preamp. It uses phantom power to operate, without transmitting it to the microphone, guaranteeing risk-free use with ribbon microphones. Compact and robust, it integrates easily into a studio or mobile configuration, while providing additional control during recording.
