Presentation
The Golden Age Audio PRE-73 DLX PREMIER is the most accomplished and faithful version of the 1073 philosophy within the PRE-73 range. It takes the fundamental principles of the famous British module and adds technical refinements aimed at precision, flexibility and saturation control, without compromising signal integrity.
The audio circuit is based exclusively on discrete components, with no integrated circuits in the signal path. This traditional architecture favours a natural dynamic response and harmonic interaction immediately associated with the great classic analogue preamplifiers. The microphone and line inputs and line output are fully transformer-balanced, using UK-made Carnhill transformers for the microphone input, line output and high-pass filter inductor. The line input uses a dedicated transformer, while the circuit is designed to preserve the Carnhill sound signature throughout the audio path.
The PRE-73 DLX PREMIER offers a gain reserve of up to 80 dB on the microphone input, making it possible to work comfortably with dynamic or ribbon microphones, even on low-level sources. Mic input impedance is switchable between 300 ohms and 1200 ohms, offering the possibility of shaping the tonal response according to the microphone used. The 48 V phantom power supply conforms to professional specifications, capable of delivering up to 10 mA, with 0.1% matched resistors to ensure excellent common mode rejection.
The active instrument input allows direct connection of guitars or basses, without passing through the microphone transformer, thus preserving the sonic coherence of the circuit. A choice of Hi-Z or 100 kΩ impedance, via an internal jumper, enables the response to be precisely matched to the characteristics of the instrument.
The preamplifier features a type 1073 inductance high-pass filter, selectable at 50, 80, 160 or 300 Hz, with a slope of 18 dB per octave, ideal for controlling unwanted bass without altering the body of the sources. The two-position AIR equaliser, 3 or 6 dB around 30 kHz, provides a subtle, controlled opening at the top end of the spectrum.
