Golden Age Audio - Pre 73 JR PREMIER

The Golden Age Audio PRE-73 Jr PREMIER is a mono microphone and instrument preamplifier designed to offer a faithful reproduction of the sonic aesthetics of the famous 1073 modules, while retaining a compact and accessible format. It is based on an entirely discrete Class A analogue design, using only resistors, capacitors and transistors, with no integrated circuits or SMD components in the audio path.

The architecture is based on UK-made Carnhill transformers at both input and output, chosen for their ability to reproduce a dense low-midrange, natural dynamics and progressive saturation when called upon. This choice of components gives the PRE-73 Jr PREMIER a warm, punchy and musical character, immediately recognisable on vocals, guitars, bass, drums or analogue keyboards.

The gain can be adjusted from 20 to 70 dB via an 11-position notched selector, allowing precise, reproducible settings. This gain range covers both dynamic and static microphones, while remaining suitable for instrument use via the built-in high-impedance DI input. The mic input impedance is switchable between 300 and 1200 ohms, a key setting for adapting the preamp's behaviour to different microphones and subtly modifying the tonal response.

The PRE-73 Jr PREMIER also incorporates tools inherited from classic designs, starting with a switchable +3 or +6 dB high-frequency AIR boost around 30 kHz, designed to provide openness and air without aggression. A 6 dB/octave low-cut filter, selectable around 40 Hz or 170 Hz, effectively cleans up unwanted bass as soon as it is picked up. Phantom power +48 V and phase inversion are accessible directly from the front panel.
