Preamps

The PREQ-73 PREMIER combines a discrete 1073 preamplifier with Carnhill transformers and a three-band inductive analogue equaliser, providing a complete analogue chain for recording and mixing.

ARTICLE N° 115942
The Golden Age Audio PREQ-73 PREMIER combines the essentials of the 1073 architecture in a single chassis: a discrete, high-gain preamplifier and an analogue equalizer with inductors, both designed according to the historic principles of British professional audio. The aim is clear: to offer a coherent, musical and reliable amplification and tonal correction chain, without the need for integrated circuits in the signal path.

The entire audio circuit is based on an entirely discrete Class A analogue topology, using selected resistors, capacitors and transistors. The microphone input and line output are balanced by Carnhill transformers manufactured in the UK, while a third transformer is dedicated to the line input. This design guarantees a wide dynamic response, progressive saturation and harmonic behaviour familiar to users of classic 1073 consoles and modules.

The preamplifier offers up to 80dB of gain in microphone mode, making it easy to use with ribbon or dynamic microphones that are not very sensitive. The 23-position notched gain selector follows the logic of the original units, with 5dB steps ensuring precision and easy recall of settings. In line mode, the gain range extends from -10 to +20 dB, with an input impedance adapted to professional levels. The microphone impedance can be switched between 300 and 1200 ohms, a decisive factor in modifying the interaction with certain microphones.

The integrated equalizer has a fully analogue three-band structure. The bass and treble bands are shelving-type, with two selectable frequencies per band and a wide range of amplification or attenuation. The midrange section is based on an inductor circuit, offering smooth, musical behaviour, with several selectable working frequencies, including an adjustable low range between 350 and 700 Hz. This design choice allows precise modelling without harshness, both for recording and for processing busses or subgroups.
