Goldsmithing has its own conventions, and the Martinez Standard MC-58S CE RN readily embraces them. The gold-finished Martinez Gold Tuning Machines 48/58 catch the light even before the first string sounds, a golden touch added to an otherwise serious classic electro-acoustic guitar.

Beneath this adornment, the wood tells a different story. The top, made of solid spruce or solid cedar depending on availability, is paired with Indian rosewood sides, back and bridge – a combination that lends the bass notes a distinct richness. The Indian rosewood binding encircles the body, whilst the maple and ebony purfling on the top and the maple purfling on the back and sides create a crisp, almost jeweller’s-like border.

The natural wood mosaic rosette surrounds the soundhole like a medallion, and the mother-of-pearl fret markers at the 5th, 7th and 9th frets guide the eye without ever weighing down the mahogany neck, which is extended by a rosewood fingerboard. The 20 frets, 12 of which are above the soundhole, open up the range towards the treble, aided by a cutaway that provides easy access to the highest positions.

The two-way adjustable truss rod adjusts the neck’s curvature as the seasons change, whilst the bone nut and bone saddle transmit the vibration with clarity. The Spanish fan bracing and Spanish neck joint are hallmarks of tried-and-tested classical luthiery. The Fishman ISY-301 preamp carries this sound to the PA system; Martinez strings fitted as standard; a Martinez gig bag is included for transport.
