The NovaStar CVT8-5G-M is a transmission converter that transforms a fibre-optic link into multiple network links for an LED display system. It enables data to be centralised via a single fibre before being distributed to eight Ethernet connections, in a housing designed to integrate easily into a technical infrastructure.

The NovaStar CVT8-5G-M distributes data from an LED system via a 40G fibre-optic link. It works by receiving the signal via a fibre and then distributing it across eight 5G Ethernet outputs, thereby replacing multiple network links with a single optical link between the processor and the distribution point. This architecture is particularly well-suited to large-scale LED installations using NovaStar’s 5G platform.

The CVT8-5G-M version is distinguished by its operation over multimode fibre. It uses a 40G SFP module with an LC connector and an 850 nm wavelength. The maximum advertised range is 100 metres, making it suitable for set-ups where the converter and LED equipment remain relatively close together whilst requiring high-speed network distribution. Two 40G SFP modules are supplied with the unit.

Each of the eight Ethernet outputs has a data rate of up to 5 Gbit/s. The CVT8-5G-M can therefore distribute data from the optical link across several network cables to display equipment. The converter is designed to be connected directly to NovaStar’s CX series processors running on the 5G platform, notably the CX40 and CX80.

Its form factor is another key aspect of its integration. The unit has a height of 1U and can be installed in a 19-inch rack using the kit provided for this purpose. The handles can be removed when space is at a premium. A USB Type-B port provides the data connection, whilst power is supplied via a PowerCON TRUE1 connector, with a stated power consumption of 33 W.

The NovaStar CVT8-5G-M therefore combines 40G optical conversion, distribution across eight 5G Ethernet ports and 1U rack integration in a single unit. Its 100-metre multimode link makes it a variant designed for 5G infrastructures where this fibre technology is suited to the distances and architecture in use.
