SSL - Classic Bus Compressor

The SSL Classic Bus Compressor utilises high-performance THAT 2181 VCAs and the brand’s signature side-chain architecture. This design promotes controlled compression, with preserved transients and musical cohesion suited to analogue stereo mixing.

The notched attack, release and ratio controls facilitate reproducible settings from one mix to the next, even for productions requiring multiple precise takes. The six positions per parameter and the wide ratio range provide direct control over audio bus compression.

SSL’s Auto Release mode utilises a two-stage circuit that adapts the compressor’s feedback to signal variations. This programme-dependent response helps preserve movement and detail when loud and soft elements follow each other rapidly, facilitating a musical dynamic treatment of complex tracks.

The 6-position side-chain high-pass filter reduces the influence of low frequencies on compression detection. This ensures that the kick drum and bass retain more impact, without unnecessarily triggering a gain reduction on the rest of the mix. This setting refines low-end control and contributes to a more controlled frequency balance on the drum bus.

SSL has equipped its Bus Comp Classic Compressor with external stereo side-chain inputs, allowing the compressor to be integrated into elaborate processing chains, particularly when exporting individual tracks. The full mix can drive the detection whilst each track passes through the audio path separately, ensuring a consistent response across the delivered elements. The Variable VCA Drive extends the harmonic range, from low distortion up to approximately 10 per cent THD. This adjustment range covers subtle compression, rich colouration or more aggressive parallel analogue saturation effects.
