A single-cutaway hollow-body guitar is known as the D’Angelico Premier Fabrizio Sotti SS, an electric guitar from the Premier series developed in collaboration with jazz guitarist Fabrizio Sotti. The laminated spruce top delivers a clear, projecting tone, whilst the laminated flamed maple back and sides add warmth to the lower mid-range. The black Tune-O-Matic bridge, combined with the Stopbar tailpiece, transmits the vibrations of the strings with clarity, whilst the absence of a pickguard keeps the top unobstructed. High-gloss finish in Fabrizio Blue, with a body 15 inches (381 mm) wide and 1.75 inches (44.45 mm) deep, assembled in Indonesia.

The maple neck, set into the body and shaped to a C-profile, fits comfortably in the hand with a width of 20 mm at the first fret and 22 mm at the twelfth, finished in the same gloss as the body. The 25-inch (635 mm) scale length slightly reduces string tension compared to shorter scales. The ebony fingerboard, with a radius of 16 inches (406.40 mm), features 22 medium vintage nickel-silver frets and white Perloid block inlays, which are also visible on the edge. The 1 11/16-inch (42.86 mm) PPS nut secures the tuning to the Grover 109 Super Rotomatic tuners, whilst a double-action truss rod adjusts the neck’s curvature. There is 5-ply binding on the top and back, and 3-ply binding on the fingerboard and headstock, with a domed headpin and a mother-of-pearl D’Angelico New York logo on the headstock.

On the electronics front, the Duncan Designed HB-102 Zebra neck pickup delivers a round tone for barre chords, whilst the Duncan Designed HB-101 Zebra bridge pickup adds bite to melodic lines; there is no middle pickup in this HH configuration. A 3-position toggle switch, a 500k potentiometer and four black Speed knobs cater for everything from a mellow jazz sound to a more aggressive rock style. A standard mono output, chrome hardware including strap buttons, D’Angelico Electrozinc 10-46 strings and a DPEDCSSBAG gig bag are included to complete the instrument. The headstock features the Premier Shield mother-of-pearl inlay and a Skyscraper aluminium truss rod cover engraved with Fabrizio Sotti’s signature, a nod to the workshop launched by John D’Angelico in New York in 1932, where 1,164 guitars were handcrafted over thirty-two years, laying the foundations for the brand’s reputation amongst jazz guitarists.

Spotlight on

D'Angelico is a New York brand of electric guitars that has existed since 1938. First went unnoticed because the guitars were manufactured only by hand in a very small workshop by two luthiers; it is in 2011, at a show at the New York's Metropolitan Museum of Art, that D'Angelico is noticed. Since then, D'Angelico guitars have been a real success thanks to their quality of manufacture and their price.
