Golden Age Audio - GA 251 MKII
The Golden Age Audio GA-251 MKII is a large-diaphragm tube condenser microphone designed to reproduce the musicality, depth and tonal balance of vintage ELA M 250/251 microphones. It combines selected capsules, discrete electronics, a NOS tube and a top-of-the-range output transformer in a meticulously crafted design, designed for sonic coherence and consistency between units.
Presentation
The microphone body is machined from brass, with a steel grille whose geometry has a direct influence on frequency response and high-frequency diffusion. The base, now CNC-machined from solid brass, ensures greater rigidity and helps to reduce parasitic vibrations. The internal architecture has been completely redesigned to improve component organisation and overall stability, with a top-of-the-range Rogers board combined with point-to-point cabling.
The 34 mm K251 capsule is at the heart of the tonal rendering of the GA-251 MKII. Each production run is subject to an extremely rigorous selection process: a large number of capsules are measured in order to select only those with the tightest tolerances, both between units and between front and rear panels. This approach guarantees excellent sonic consistency from one microphone to the next, an essential element for studios working with pairs or several identical units. The result is a balanced response, with a present but controlled bass, a legible midrange and an airy treble, without aggressiveness.
The electronics are based on a NOS Philips 5840W lamp mounted in triode mode to reduce noise and optimise longevity. This choice produces a stable, smooth and detailed sound character, while keeping noise levels under control. The AMI 10:1 dual-wound output transformer uses carefully selected materials to ensure accurate reproduction across the entire bandwidth.
