Novastar - MCTRL 600

The Novastar MCTRL 600 acts as an interface between video sources and the LED display system. Its architecture combines signal processing and data transmission functions within a 1U controller, with a load capacity of up to 2.3 million pixels per unit. The input resolution can be set by the user, with support for up to 1,920 × 1,200 at 60 Hz for an 8-bit video source.

The video section is based on two input formats commonly used in broadcast and production chains: HDMI 1.3 and DVI Single Link. The MCTRL 600 also accepts HDMI signals with HDCP and various colour depths. Depending on the source used, the processor can handle 8-, 10- or 12-bit signals, whilst RGB, YCrCb 4:2:2 and YCrCb 4:4:4 formats are supported. This flexibility allows more information to be retained in the video signals before they are transmitted to the display.

The four Gigabit Ethernet RJ45 outputs then distribute the data to the LED display units, with up to 650,000 pixels per port. Capacity can thus be distributed across multiple lines whilst maintaining centralised management from the controller. NovaStar also allows several MCTRL 600 units to be daisy-chained via the UART IN and OUT ports. This configuration enables the system to be expanded whilst maintaining coordinated control of the various units.

The controller also features an audio input and a dedicated connector for a light sensor. A compatible sensor can be connected directly to automatically adjust the screen’s brightness to suit ambient conditions. The management and saving of configuration files also make it easier to set up the system and reuse settings.
