The Schoeps MK 5 is a capsule from the Colette range with a polar pattern that can be switched between omnidirectional and cardioid using a mechanical selector. Its single-diaphragm design allows it to offer the best of both polar patterns, notably with excellent bass reproduction in omnidirectional mode and preserved directivity at low frequencies in cardioid mode. When paired with the CMC 6xt, it extends its frequency response up to 43 kHz in omnidirectional mode and 41 kHz in cardioid mode.

Presentation
The Schoeps MK 5 is a particularly versatile Colette capsule that allows the sound engineer to mechanically switch between two polar patterns: omnidirectional or cardioid. A simple selector switch on the side of the capsule allows the user to alter its acoustic behaviour without the need for electronic switching.
Its design is based on a single diaphragm, which acts as a pure pressure transducer in the omnidirectional position and as a pressure gradient transducer in the cardioid position. This architecture enables the MK 5 to retain the acoustic characteristics specific to each polar pattern. In omnidirectional mode, it benefits in particular from excellent low-frequency response and low sensitivity to wind, plosives and structure-borne noise. In cardioid mode, by contrast, it retains its directivity right down to the very low frequencies, making it easier to isolate a sound source in a more complex acoustic environment.
The frequency response extends from 20 Hz to 28 kHz in omnidirectional mode and from 40 Hz to 26 kHz in cardioid mode. Its particularly low self-noise levels – 12 dB-A and 13 dB-A respectively – help to preserve the detail of the recorded sources.
The MK 5 is also well-suited to Hi-Res applications. When paired with the Schoeps CMC 6xt, its response extends up to 43 kHz in omnidirectional mode and 41 kHz in cardioid mode, paving the way for high-resolution recordings and sound design applications requiring the preservation of ultrasonic information.
For sound engineers, recording engineers and studios seeking an extremely versatile solution, the MK 5 allows the polar pattern to be adapted to the recording situation without changing the capsule.
